The
University of Saint Mary Starr Institute is a professional academic
organization
dedicated to the idea of promoting international awareness – in
the classroom, on the campus, and in the larger community in which
Saint Mary exists. In keeping with the ecumenical spirit of our
founders, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, the Institute is
equally motivated by another idea, that of championing the causes
of peace and justice wherever Saint Mary has any influence and can
make its voice be heard.
We are committed to the promotion of attitudes,
policies and practices that foster freedom, generosity and the
equitable enrichment of life for all members of the global community. Starr Global Studies Institute believes
in the essential dignity of the individual and of the manifold cultures
that constitute the global community. We support mutual understanding,
respect, and ethical and charitable attitudes among the diverse members
of the global community. We are dedicated to studying the history,
trends, problems, implications, and potential of the integrating
global community.
We work to identify:
- Opportunities for the betterment of humankind.
- Challenges, obstacles and opposition that may inhibit beneficial integration.
We seek solutions to issues of global concern that will help to foster peace,
justice and the enrichment of life for all the global community.
In keeping with our mission, the Starr Institute hopes to create an international dimension to every academic aspect of the university, thereby enabling students to see beyond their Midwestern environment into a wider world and understand that they, along with every American citizen, are also responsible for knowing more about that world and accepting their responsibility to it as part of the broader human community. We also strive through a variety of forums, lectures and conferences held throughout the academic year to inform, inspire and challenge the local community in which we live.
For our students we endeavor to offer a variety of experiences of the international environment: study, work or travel experiences abroad, more extensive language training, internships in businesses or government and non-governmental agencies engaged in international activities, and eventually jobs in such agencies. For the all-university environment we aim to provide numerous opportunities each semester to hear speakers or participate in events which have international import or implications. Throughout all these activities we acknowledge our responsibility to accentuate and support the principles of peace, justice, freedom and human rights.
